Dive Kit for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

Describe a dive in your AI assistant and get a real decompression plan back. The numbers come from the same Bühlmann ZH-L16C engine with gradient factors that runs in the Dive Kit app, not from the chatbot's guess.

Connect Dive Kit

What it does

Dive Kit turns your AI assistant into a complete dive planner. You talk through the dive in plain words. The assistant reasons about it and asks for what is missing, then sends the depths, times, gases and cylinders to Dive Kit, which computes the answer and hands it back. Every plan carries a link that opens the same plan in the Dive Kit app. Set it up in about a minute.

What the assistant can do

The assistant has 18 tools, each one line on what it gets back:

Planning

plan_dive
Stop table, gas per cylinder, warnings, contingencies and CCR bailout, with a link that opens the plan in the Dive Kit app.
find_max_bottom_time
The longest open-circuit bottom time on one level that keeps every cylinder above its reserve, fits a time-to-surface budget, or needs no stop.
check_no_deco
How long you can stay at a depth without decompression stops.
read_share_link
Decodes a Dive Kit share link into the plan it carries, ready to recompute or change.

Gas

gas_specs
MOD, minimum depth, END, EAD, density and PPO₂ for one mix.
best_mix
The best mix for a depth, the nearest standard fill and the deco gases to carry.

Blending

plan_blend
A partial-pressure blending plan to a target nitrox or trimix, with bank use.
mix_result
The mix a fill produced, to check a blend plan or a fill already done.
blend_continuous
Feed ratios and analyzer targets for continuous-flow blending.
decant
Two cylinders joined by a whip, and where to stop for a target mix.

Consumption

gas_usage
The gas one cylinder spends over a no-stop profile, with reserve and turn pressure.
rmv_sac
A diver's breathing rate (RMV and SAC) from a logged dive.

Weighting

buoyancy_check
The lead a rig needs, and what a flooded suit, failed wing or lost stage does.

Units

convert_units
Pressure, volume, depth, temperature, weight and breathing rate between units.

Knowledge

get_guide
One section of the planning guide.
lookup_cylinders
Cylinder sizes, pressures, buoyancy and the plan preset for each, from Dive Kit's open cylinder data.
lookup_certifications
Diving courses by agency, with prerequisites, equivalents and limits, from Dive Kit's open certification data.
lookup_references
Vetted papers, books and standards behind the numbers, from Dive Kit's open data.

Try it

Paste any of these into a chat with Dive Kit turned on. The answers below are what the tools returned, with Dive Kit's defaults such as gradient factors of 50/80.

  • "What's the best gas mix for 40 m?"

    best_mix

Best mix 27/9.8 at a 1.4 bar PPO₂ cap and a 30 m END limit, nearest standard fill 25/25, and EANx50 from 21 m for deco. It flags the best mix's 5.7 g/L density as over the 5.2 g/L recommended limit.

  • "I have a cylinder with 21/35 at 123 bar and I want to top it off to 32/20 at 200 bar. What do I do?"

    plan_blend

Bleed to 112 bar, add oxygen to 138 bar, then air to 200 bar. Achieved 31.8/20, with the oxygen-clean rules for a gas above 40% oxygen.

  • "Is 25 minutes at 30 m on EANx32 a no-stop dive?"

    check_no_deco

No-stop time 16 min at GF 50/80, so 25 min needs decompression stops. PPO₂ 1.28 bar at 30 m, MOD 33.6 m at 1.4 bar.

  • "Plan 45 m for 25 min on twin 12s of 21/35 at 232 bar, with an 11 L stage of EANx50 and a 7 L of oxygen, both at 200 bar."

    plan_dive

56 min run time, 29 min to the surface with 22 min of stops from 18 m, the stop table and the gas per cylinder. The back gas ends at 89 bar, above its 77 bar reserve.

  • "On my last dive I averaged 15 m for 45 min and my AL80 went from 200 to 70 bar. What's my SAC, and would a full AL80 last 40 minutes at 18 m?"

    rmv_sac, then gas_usage

RMV 12.2 L/min (1.16 bar/min on that AL80). At 18 m for 40 min the AL80 uses 131 bar and keeps 76 bar, above its 69 bar reserve by thirds, and the tool flags that the dive ends under its 135 bar turn pressure.

  • "How much lead do I need with a 12 L steel and a 5 mm wetsuit in salt water?"

    lookup_cylinders, then buoyancy_check

The 12 L 232 bar steel from the cylinder data, then about 3 kg of lead to be neutral at 3 m with a near-empty cylinder, as a starting point for an in-water check.

  • "Where does the 5.2 g/L gas density limit come from?"

    lookup_references

Anthony and Mitchell, Respiratory Physiology of Rebreather Diving (2016), which sets the 5.2 g/L ideal and 6.2 g/L maximum, with a link, and Warkander et al. (1990) on CO₂ retention from dense gas.

When a detail is missing, such as a cylinder size or fill, the assistant asks before it plans. When it assumes a default, like gradient factors of 50/80, it tells you.

Plan a real dive with it

Dive Kit is at its best in a conversation. The assistant researches, asks what it needs and calls several tools in turn. Here is how some longer conversations go.

A wreck dive with a buddy

"Plan a wreck penetration dive on the HMAS Canberra near Melbourne for me and a buddy."

  1. The assistant looks up the wreck online: where it lies, the depth to the sand and the deck, conditions and any permit.
  2. It asks about your certification and penetration training, the gases you can get, your cylinders, SAC, the water temperature and your exposure suit.
  3. best_mix picks the gas for the depth, then plan_dive plans it with your reserve and a lost-deco-gas contingency.
  4. gas_usage prices the penetration segment, and find_max_bottom_time finds the bottom time your reserve allows, to set the turn point.
  5. buoyancy_check weights the drysuit rig, and you end with a share link that opens the plan in the Dive Kit app.

Penetration needs wreck training and a guideline. Dive Kit plans the gas and the decompression, not the penetration.

The fill came out wrong

"My blender was supposed to give me 32% but the analyser reads 29.8. My dive is 30 m for 40 min tomorrow. Is this still OK?"

  1. gas_specs gives the analysed mix's MOD and its PPO₂ at 30 m.
  2. plan_dive plans the dive on the analysed mix, and check_no_deco compares its no-stop time with the mix you ordered.
  3. If the plan no longer works, plan_blend works out a top-up and mix_result checks what it would give.
  4. You decide between re-planning on the gas you have and topping it up, with the numbers for both.

A liveaboard week

"Four dives a day for five days in the Red Sea on EAN32, help me plan day one."

  1. The assistant asks for each dive's profile and the surface intervals the boat runs.
  2. plan_dive plans each dive in Red Sea water, carrying the tissue state from one dive's share link into the next.
  3. gas_usage checks each dive against the boat's cylinders.
  4. get_guide brings in repetitive diving and how CNS and OTU build over a day, and you end with the day's four plans.

From a logged dive to a new plan

"Here is my last dive log: 32 m, 45 min, twin 12s from 210 to 90 bar. Next month I want to do 40 m for 30 min on the same rig."

  1. rmv_sac turns the log into your breathing rate.
  2. gas_usage and plan_dive use that rate as your working SAC, and best_mix suggests a gas for 40 m.
  3. find_max_bottom_time with the reserve limit shows how long the rig allows at 40 m.
  4. You end with a plan built on your own breathing rate rather than a default.

Moving to a drysuit

"I am moving from a 7 mm wetsuit and an AL80 to a drysuit and a steel 12. How does my weighting change?"

  1. lookup_cylinders finds both cylinders and their buoyancy from full to empty.
  2. buoyancy_check runs once for each rig, and the assistant compares the lead each one needs.
  3. The failure cases come with it: a flooded suit and a failed wing, for each setup.
  4. You end with a starting weight for the new rig to confirm in an in-water check.

Why the numbers differ

"My dive computer showed a 3 minute stop at 6 m, Dive Kit gave 5. Why?"

  1. The assistant asks for your computer's model and gradient factors, and reads your plan with read_share_link if you paste the link.
  2. plan_dive re-plans the dive with the gradient factors your computer uses.
  3. get_guide brings in why plans differ and Dive Kit's conventions.
  4. lookup_references cites the Bühlmann and gradient factor sources, so you can read them yourself.

Every plan is a planning aid for trained divers. Check it against your training, your team and your dive computer.

The same numbers every time

With Dive Kit connected, the same question with the same inputs gives the same numbers every time. Every figure comes from Dive Kit's engine, not from the model's arithmetic: the Bühlmann ZH-L16C model with gradient factors, and one set of conventions for water, surface pressure and rounding, shared with the Dive Kit app. The conventions page explains each one and why Dive Kit's numbers can differ from a textbook formula.

Diving knowledge and vetted sources

The assistant also gets the diving knowledge around the numbers. The planning guide covers gradient factors, gas planning and blending, bailout and contingencies, warnings, repetitive dives, edge cases and why plans differ between tools. For facts, the assistant looks up Dive Kit's open datasets of cylinders, certifications and references, and cites them instead of searching the web. The data is open at open.divekit.app under CC BY 4.0.

What it will not do

  • Call a plan safe. It shows the numbers and the warnings, and the call is yours.
  • Give medical advice. If you have symptoms after a dive, contact emergency services or DAN.
  • Add a safety stop. Plans do not model one, so add it as you normally would.
  • Tell you when you can fly. Flying after diving is not modelled.
  • Guarantee a plan, a number or an answer. See the disclaimer.

Dive Kit is a planning aid for trained divers, not a dive computer. Check every plan against your training, your team and your dive computer.

Disclaimer

Dive Kit gives no guarantee about any plan, number or answer your assistant produces with it. You alone are responsible for your dive, your training and your safety. AI assistants make mistakes, and they can state numbers from memory even when told to use Dive Kit, so check every figure against the Dive Kit app or the tool result, and against your training. Never dive a plan you do not understand. Nothing here is medical advice. The full terms, including warranty and liability, are in the terms of use.

Privacy

The server is anonymous. There is no sign-in and no account. It receives the dive inputs your assistant sends, uses them only to compute the answer and does not store them. We keep error reports and anonymous usage counts, such as which tool ran, with none of your inputs. Your assistant's own privacy terms cover the conversation itself. The details are in the privacy policy.

Fair use

The server is for personal use through your own AI assistant. It is not an open API: do not build it into an app, a website or a service. Each client gets fair-use limits, and heavy or automated use is rate limited. If you want to license the Dive Kit engine for your own product, write to [email protected].
